I really love hats, I always have. I wear them a lot, in winter and in summer. I adore that particular touch they add to my style.

When I was a little girl, back in Cologne, Germany, I used to dream of designing my own collection one day. Instead of making hats, I´m styling and coloring hair. Its obvious that the head is my passion. Now I had the chance to visit a great milliner, probably the best one on Mallorca.

If you love wearing hats just like I do, I strongly recommend visiting MARAT ATELIER in Palma de Mallorca and meet the charming Marta Ortega. Listening to her profound voice and talking about such cool hats, will make you feel like you have to own one of those wonderful hats she has created.

VISITING THE MARAT ATELIER

I was lucky enough to visit Marta Ortega from MARAT ATELIER, to learn more about her little but unique hat factory.

At Marat Atelier all hats are handmade, using all kinds of different molds to create particular forms, such as cork or wood molds, using pins or vapor to bring the hat into the perfect shape.

PANAM HAT DELUXE

It’s the famous Panama hat, Marta is working a lot with. She is sourcing only high-quality unfinished Panama hats made in Ecuador. To my surprise, the best ones are manufactured in Ecuador, not in Panama. At Marta Atelier, those unfinished Panama hats, are modeled and refined with great love and attention to detail, to turn them into beautiful masterpieces.

Being a professional stylist, working in the film and photo industry, Marta has discovered over the years her passion in making outstanding hats. Inspired by the retro tendency and old movie starlets like Audrey Hepburn, she decided to style and create her own exclusive collection.

GO FOR THAT HAT

“I’d like to inspire people wearing a classy hat. There are so many different styles you can give a hat, what makes it so interesting. At MARAT ATELIER we use only a high-quality unfinished Panama hat, refining it with our style, giving it the right shape and offering our customer the opportunity to buy a beautiful custom made hat.”

THE PANAMA HAT – A STAR BY ITSELF

Getting back to the Panama hat, I was fascinated to learn that the art of confecting those hats by the indigenous, has been added to the Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

To make them, the artisans usually use the “Paja Toquilla” straw, soaking them in bleach (psst…it’s their secret) to create a bright white and soft Panama hat. When handmade, the finer the sewing, the higher the price. That’s why an exclusive handmade top quality Panama hat can cost up to a boosting 25.000 Euros.

FOR BEAUTY´S SAKE

You see, a hat it’s not just a hat, and I understand, when listening to Marta, she is willing to give back the dignity a hat deserves – for beauty’s sake.

ELEGANCE, SIMPLICITY, AND SUSTAINABILITY

Because for Marta Ortega it’s all about elegance, simplicity, and sustainability. No chemicals are used in her little atelier. Tea, beetroot, onions are the most natural ingredient used to color her beautiful hats.

MARAT ATELIER & FRIENDS

Marta also supports a few local artists, who share the same spirit, working consciously and sustainably, making wonderful illustrated silk scarves, little handbags, and other treasures.

WHERE TO FIND MARAT ATELIER?

In the heart of Palma’s old town, Marta Ortega will welcome you with a bright smile, in a beautiful retro ambiance, bringing you back to the 50´s with some jazzy music – and suddenly Humphrey Bogart opens the door…

So, there is no excuse for not visiting MARAT ATELIER and being indulged by those amazing masterpieces.
