I have to admit that until now, practically all my posts were mainly dedicated to the feminine world. So I decided to bring forth a subject that could appeal to both women and men: S-H-O-E-S.

Us women always get pretty excited about our high heels but we love to see our men go in style too, right? Well, in Palma de Mallorca there is a unique space, dedicated to the most authentic masculine footwear: Join me at MONGE’s shop, located in the historic center of Palma; it is a true paradise of good taste offering luxurious handmade shoes “Made in Mallorca”.

I’m a real shoe enthusiast. They’re definitely one of the most crucial accessories to turn a good outfit, into a perfect one. I often choose which shoes I want to wear first, before I get dressed. I believe this accessory reveals a lot about someone’s personality. Sorry if you catch me staring at your shoes, I’m probably delighted by your shoes.

“THE SHOE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE” – Pedro Monge

I was walking through Palma, when I suddenly discovered this beautiful window display from MONGE, showcasing those breathtakingly high quality shoes for men.

MONGE, it’s not just special because of the elegant ambiance of the store or the wonderful revealing aromas of old wood and leather, but also because the shoes are made carefully by hand, with great mastery and passion; reviving the centenary tradition of making high quality men’s shoes here in Majorca. Oh, by the way: They also have a small yet superb shoe collection for women! We are saved ;-)

MONGE combines contemporary design, luxurious craftsmanship and traditional manufacturing of Mallorca, giving a classic shoe a cool and modern twist.

I was curious to meet Pedro Monge Álvarez, the owner of the store and designer of the already famous MONGE shoes.

MY INTERVIEW WITH THE SHOE DESIGNER, PEDRO MONGE

How did you get the idea to open a shoe store for men? Before shoes, what were you previously involved in?

I’m a journalist, but I came here to Mallorca to work for Camper Shoes. I always loved fashion but in particular footwear. After working a couple of years at Camper, I got inspired by the old heritage of shoe craftsmanship on this island, so I decided to launch MONGE, to design my own shoe collection.

What is the philosophy of MONGE?

We’re taking advantage of the long shoe making history here in Mallorca. Thanks to this traditional know-how, we’re able to produce top quality footwear, using the very best materials, giving the classic shoe a more modern and fresh touch.

Do you manufacture all your shoes here on the island?

Yes, they’re all hand made in Mallorca. Each and every single piece we use to make the shoe, is made here on the island.

Who is the designer? What or whom inspires you?

I am the designer. I get my inspiration from magazines, the shoes people wear on the street, old things I own, and I find inspiration at flea markets. Inspiration is everywhere!

Is MONGE a sustainable company? If yes, why?

I’d say yes, because we don’t follow the concept of buying, using and throwing away. In fact we don’t do seasonal sales in our store. We believe in a classic high quality product, one that always keeps it’s value. That’s why we don’t follow trends. All shoes are made in Mallorca by local people, getting paid fair salaries.

A classic shoe every man should own?

A pair of black colored Oxfords, always is a must-have.

Do men spend money on shoes?

Yes of course! It’s one the few whims men have; Shoes and watches.

Can I ask, how many pairs of shoes you own?

You probably know this saying: “The shoemaker’s son always goes barefoot.” I don’t know how many I have, but not that many, quite often I wear the same ones.

Are trends important to you?

Like I said before, we don’t follow trends. We like to play around with colors to give classic shoes a new twist.

What is your vision for MONGE in 5 to 10 years?

Maybe opening another store; But I’m not looking for big growth. We like what we do and we want to keep doing it with the same spirit, passion and dedication. Our ambition is not to grow, we’re happy to run our own business. It’s not about reducing cost in order to produce more and more and open hundreds of stores. Quality is our main priority.

Which restaurants on the island are your favorites?

In Palma I love to go to “Patron Lunares”, “Nama” is my favorite in Deia, and for a drink and some I definitely choose “Flexas”.

Where do you usually have your morning coffee?

I don’t drink coffee; I like to have my breakfast at home, just fruit juice and cereal. I can’t leave my house with an empty stomach.

Where is your favorite spot to relax in Mallorca?

I really love the countryside. But to relax, I think any Tramuntana village is perfect.

As you may know we are a beauty/esthetic salon, how important are esthetics for you?

Seeking beauty is a big part of a designer’s life. Our aim is to make people’s life more beautiful and enjoyable. So, it’s crucial.

Any skin or hair care secret that you want to share with us?

I’m very lazy when it comes to skincare, however I believe good hair care products are a must. I use high end products with no alcohol in order to avoid hair damage.

What qualities should a hair and beauty salon possess to help you feel comfortable?

Excellent customer service is key. Of course, a professional should be professional, something that is not always guaranteed. Being attentive is absolutely essential. The client wants to feel comfortable, but without getting overwhelmed. That’s how we want our customers to feel.

I have to agree: Pedro’s welcoming was excellent and very natural. This great artist radiates pure passion and love through its sublime creations. It’s an honor to have here in Mallorca, such a master of men’s footwear.
